this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, august 7th, 2013. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm alexis christoforous. president obama is speaking out about the terror threat that's forced the closure of more than a dozen diplomats posts. yesterday they were ordered out of yemen and the first criminal charges were filed in last year's attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. jericka duncan has our report. >> reporter: president obama got serious on "the tonight show with jay leno," speaking publicly for the first time about the current terror threat. >> it's significant enough that we're taking every precaution. >> reporter: the president ordered the closure of almost two dozen embassies and consulates in the muslim world since last weekday. 19 of them were shut down

saturday. >> this extreme radicalism is still out there and we've got to stay on top of it. >> reporter: yesterday the u.s., france, and britain evacuated their workers from embassies in yemen because of the threat. >> this was a decision related to a specific immediate threat. >> reporter: the u.s. government continues to target alleged members of al qaeda as it deals with this latest threat. a suspected u.s. drone strike killed four men yesterday. it's the fourth attack in two weeks. a renewed focus on security at diplomatic posts overseas surfaced following the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, on september 11th, 2012. ambassador christopher stevens and three other americans were

i think the events in the next few weeks will determine that. >> i would go one step further. i think it's going to fail if something doesn't change, and to the american people, matters in egypt matter to us. yesterday they continue third protests. they refuse to negotiate unless morsi is returned to power. the trial of the army soldier accused in the deadly assault at ft. hood, texas, is expected to take months. it got under way yesterday with major nidal hasan admitting he was the major gunman in the shooting spree. susan mcginnis reports. >> u.s. army soldier nidal hasan spoke softly but distinctly when he told jurors i am the shooter. acting as his own attorney he called himself an imperfect muslim and apologized for his

>> reporter: brett anderson begged his friend james dimaggio to turn himself in. dimaggio is suspected of setting fire to his home 65 miles east of san diego on sunday. inside were the remains of christina anderson and a child. authorities are trying to determine if the child is the couple's 8-year-old son ethan. >> we'll be attempting to conduct some dna tests and it may be a day or two before we get the results back. >> reporter: an amber alert for ethan and his sister hannah went out wednesday. >> hannah, we all love you very much. if you have a chance, take it. you run. you'll be fun. >> reporter: hannah's friends gathered at her high school where she's expected to be a junior in the fall. they passed out flyers. they hope she will be found. hannah sometimes referred to dimaggio as uncle jim and

fortune. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, alexis. a strong yen sent most asian markets falling overnight. tokyo's nikkei fell 4% while hong kong's hang seng lost 1%. on wall street, stocks were lower. the dow lost more than 93 points. the nasdaq was also down 27 points. president obama outlines his plan dwroefr hall the nation 's mortgage finance system. speaking in phoenix yesterday, mr. obama said he wants to phase out the giant mortgage lender fannie mae and freddie mac. >> for too long these companies were allowed to make huge profits buying mortgages knowing that if their bets went bad, taxpayers would be left holding the bag. >> the president wants to put the private sector, not the government, primarily at risk on loans. he also wants to expand refinancing for homeowners and

increase access to affordable rental housing. federal safety investigators say the pilot of the southwest plane that crashed at laguardia lack month took control of the jet from the first officer when it was just 400 feet from the ground. southwest flight 345 hit the runway nose first. 16 people were injured. experts say it is unusual for a captain or co-pilot to take control so close to the ground unless there are profound safety issues. well, young people are slowly starting to buy cars again. five years ago people between the ages of 18 and 34 bought more than 14% of the new cars in the u.s. then the recession hit. many young people couldn't get jobs, and that number dropped to 10.5% according to polk auto research, but last year the figure grew to more than 12%. the jackpot for tonight's power ball drawing is estimated to be $425 million so far. a single winner taking a lump sum payment after taxes would

there's a new cop on the beat in boston. he doesn't move much but he works cheap. transit police have placed a cardboard cutout of a police officer in the bike rack of a cambridge station. officials say a full-time officer there would cost $200,000 a year. the cutout is a likeness of officer david sylem. >> strange. it took a while getting used to. i was a little startled when i first saw it but i'm used to it. >> sylem says it's working. only one bike was stolen last month down from july. they're taking extreme measures to crack down on a quality of life problem. it's aimed at dog owners who don't pick up after their pets. paul burton of our boston station wbz reports.

>> reporter: dog owners at devon wood condominiums at braintree are on close watch. folks are not picking up after their pets at this beautifully landscaped condominium, which has become a problem. >> huge issue. staff steps in it. owners step in it. >> reporter: because no one can prove who left it behind, they've instituted dog dna testing. >> most people thought it was a broke. on the memo i said csi comes to braintree. >> reporter: and for a $50 charge the condo requires all dog owners to be swabbed for dna testing and entered into a database. >> i was a little upset in the beginning at having to pay for it, but i do understand where they're coming from. i do understand it's a problem. >> reporter: now if anyone finds dog waste on the property can report it to management who will send it off to lab for testing.
